Panel 1.
Professor 2: Do you suppose I could ask you or Epo some questions while we look for Wosec?
Panel 2.
Alkina: Sure, what would you like to know?
Professor 2: I am looking for data on our planet’s atmosphere.
Panel 3.
Alkina: Don’t you have planetary satellites monitoring your planet’s atmosphere?
Epo: I do not detect any such satellites.
Panel 4.
Professor 2: Epo is correct. Only satellites that advance our trade with other space faring civilizations get funded.
Panel 5.
Alkina: That is not very wise. How do you predict weather?
Professor 2: Well, you probably noticed that we all live inside interconnected, climate controlled habitats.
Panel 6.
Alkina: Oh, right.
What does it mean?
Satellite – is a natural or man-made object that orbits a planet or other object.
Is that all?
What Are Satellites Used For? – A comprehensive list of what satellites do.
Hey, where’s my science?
There are many artificial, that is, man-made satellites in orbit around Earth today. Some are designed for communication like the ones that broadcast television signals; others for navigation, like Global Positioning System (GPS), and some for astronomical observations, like Fermi and Swift. Some satellites are used to monitor Earth to see how land is being used and to predict the weather, among several other things. Can you think of some other uses of satellites?
